The Centro Botanico Moutan is a very special place. It seems to be a nursery but it is not. It’s a garden, a nursery, a plantation, a botanic garden, in one world - a place born from immense love for Chinese tree peonies.
Its name comes from “Mu Dan” which is the Chines name of the Paeonia arborea. The whole garden covers 15 hectares and contains the world’s largest collection of tree and herbaceous peonies (over 200,000 plants.
It’s, for sure, a place to visit. The best time, obviously, is in April and May when peonies are blooming. Maybe not at the very beginning of April. And remember – check carefully the time the garden closes and keep it in mind! It’s so big and beautiful that it’s easy to lose the sense of time. Like it happened to me and I risked to sleep there.
